Loving Letter was designed and taught by Zina Kazban at the Royal School of Needlework's International Summer School in Lexington, Kentucky. When the RSN announced their International Summer School in Lexington, Kentucky Jenn jumped at the chance to attend. She had worked one of Zina’s designs before and loved her attention to detail in her designs. The story of Loving Letter dates back to the 18th century when women would embroider small silk envelopes to keep all of their correspondences, some secret. It is worked on a silk ground with DMC floss, silk threads, and gold metal threads in goldwork.
This is the second class I have taken online through EGA's Online Studio—this one with Lizzy Pye, a RSN-trained embroiderer, teacher and designer. This is one of the most technically challenging pieces I have ever done and I learned so much! There was felt padding (in several layers in some areas, some of which was extra thick wool carpet padding), soft string padding, colored couching, plain couching, combined couching, plunging and tying back all the threads, kid leather, chipping, cutwork, pearl purl outlining (angled and cut corner), plate, spangles ...whew! Certainly a lot of goldwork techniques covered, most of which were fun, but working with plate....not so much. Not perfect, but finally done. Stitched on linen and begun December 2025 and finished March 2026.
